Klaatu - 3:47 EST (1976). Klaatu's first album, 3:47 EST, was released in 1976. Often cited as a progressive rock band, these Canadians would be better described as progressive pop. The band drew their name (as well as the album title) from the 1951 sci-fi classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still. According to the film, hostile alien Klaatu (the bad guy) arrives in Washington D.C. at exactly 3:47 Eastern Standard Time. Klaatu gained some minor attention in 1976/77 when this album was thought to be a secret, re-united Beatles album recorded under a fake band name. It wasn't. Though Beatles-esque at moments, I picked up more of a Paul McCartney & Wings vibe on this album. With elements of spacy pop, Carl Sagan, and the silly side of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, I gave 3:47 EST a B- and would recommend it to those who like: Wings, ELO, Supertramp, Sgt Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour, and obscure prog rock or pop.
