Discussion about Spahn Ranch - Collateral Damage
Inabel
Grizzling, nasty bad-blood music from the guts of Hell. Named subtly after Manson's former hangout, they forge Industrial with hardcore to create a mutant hybrid.Plagiarising many others working in the field stylistically (you can hear GODFLESH, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, VOMITO NEGRO, SKINNY PUPPY and a plethora of others in this music) and coming out with a style which is uncomfortably their own. After around ten listens the strengths of this album begin to show through - there are distinctive songs which, rather than relying on 'tune' as such (it's a little too fuzzed and grizzled for actual whistle-along melodies), use an overall construction to impress their sound upon you. And they can put a song together too, although mostly they prefer to fill the spaces with a variety of Dystopian-reflecting samples - vocal snatches shout mild abuse and speak of the darker side of human nature. The vocals are typically fx'd out of focus, but the words are distinctive.Nice to hear a group without at least a hint of REZNOR's approach to composition or execution. And, while it's hardly anything new or unusual, it does power along at a decent pace.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
