‘Little Too Late’ is uptempo, coming in on a simple-but-effective bassline, before exploding into the kind of irreverent fayre we’ve come to expect. It’s full of slide guitar in an offbeat style not unlike White Stripes musically, though Chris Todd’s vocals could not be more different than Jack White’s, especially with the deep bass-y backing vocals underneath giving the overall vocal sound a real depth and menace. Lyrically it’s classic blues, with the protagonist just a little too much of everything that’s not good for him and his relationships. It’s a song that’s been a firm fixture in the band’s live set for a year or so and it bears all the hallmarks of a song that the band are truly happy with.
By its own admission, ‘No Stone Unturned’ is the band’s slowest song to date, and I love it. It showcases the band’s tight rhythm section and feel for what they are doing. And while Todd’s maniacal caterwaul is still very much in evidence, he also demonstrates a lovely tone in his lower ranges. I wouldn’t by any stretch call myself a Blues aficionado, so I’ll let the band help me out by claiming it took its inspiration for this song from Mississipi Fred McDowell. It’s mean and moody and by the time it slithers its way back into the swamp, you just wanna stick it back on again.
